Todo Modo: Florence’s Must-Visit Bookstore Café for Coffee, Wine, and Literary Bliss
Our family was in Florence, Italy for the holidays. I discovered a wonderful café-bookstore that is now one of my favorite places to drop in and hang out for a while: Todo Modo located at Via dei Fossi 15.
If you enjoy browsing cozy bookstores, drinking coffee, sipping wine, working in an aesthetically appointed environment (it is laptop friendly, the Wi-Fi is fabulous), this is your place.

Me and Todo Modo. A love story.
C’mon in, I want to share with you some experiential touring. On your next visit, you can look forward to a quiet respite from the city.
As you walk through the front door, you’ll enter a cocoon-esque atmosphere, surrounded by all things books; the visual, the aroma, the kid-in-a-candy-store stupor.
Bookshelves line both walls beckoning you to browse a variety of genres. The Uqbar cafe is in the back. Head that way.

This is the Uqbar counter and dining area.
As natural light and plants add to the ambiance, enjoy coffee, pastries, a glass of wine, or lunch while basking in this bibliotherapy salon.
This is a great place to meet up with friends to start or wind down your day. It’s also a wonderful place to sneak off to when you need some quiet time. Books are the key to escapism.

I found a perfect place to sip my coffee while perusing books prior to settling into my writing project.
There are tables on the ground floor and additional tiered desks that are suspended by ropes, making a unique reading-studying-working environment.
I brought my foldable keyboard and iPad; there was a place to plug in and recharge (myself and my electronics).
This is one of my favorite places to work on my manuscript for my debut novel, code named SBNH.

Did I mention Todo Modo is dog-friendly? A nearby napping Golden Retriever set the casual vibe.
I used to work in a corporate environment where I could bring my dog to work with me. Spencer was very social, he’d make his rounds, accompanying employees on the elevator or escorting them up the stairs. And then he’d make his way back to my office and assume a very similar position on the floor.

Here’s a sample of some of the English language books that were on the shelves at Todo Modo in December 2024:
- Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout (2024).
- Confess by Colleen Hoover (2017).
- Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace (2005).
- Measuring the World by Daniel Kehlman (2006).
- Wellness by Nathan Hill (2023).
- The Topeka School by Ben Lerner (2019). Pulitzer price nominee for fiction, longlisted and nominated for a bevy of prizes.
- A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara (2015). Booker prize nominee, Women’s prize for fiction, and many other awards.
- Six Memo’s for the next millennium by Italo Calvino (1996). A series of lectures written in the final year of his life.
- The Tearsmith by Erin Doom (2024).
- Freedom by Jonathan Franzen (2010). Longlisted for the Warwick Prize, LA Times Book Prize nominee, Chicago Tribune Heartland Price for Fiction, and several others.
I love the range of books that are offered. I could spend hours browsing this lovely jewel of a shop that is situated a block from the Arno and within the historical section.
